When living in London there can be nothing more relaxing than a lovely mini break in the Home Counties. A la Bridget Jones, I packed my bags, started up the car and drove the hour out of time and down the M4 into the leafy Home Counties to the Berkshire hotel – The Royal Oak.
It’s amazing how quickly you can get into the countryside from central London. Considering I will spend an hour on the tube to get to Shoreditch door to door, in the same time I could be sitting by a raging fire in a Berkshire pub.We picked The Royal Oak purely based on the online reviews when searching for a Berkshire hotel, and I believe it has been recognised by the Michelein guide. So we booked it for £125 a night and off we went. The food was lovely – we had lunch and breakfast which was included. A restful afternoon was spent drinking wine and playing chess by the fire, and reading the weekend Paper. What more could you ask for!It was lovely to see the weekly boarders from the local school leaving at lunch on Saturday and many families seemed to favour The Royal Oak as the lunch time restaurant of choice. It was full for every meal.No safe but there was a shotgun cabinet in the wardrobe!
