Cats, cats and then more cats! Longhaired, shorthaired, fluffy, skinny, sleepy, playful….If you didn’t like cats you were in the wrong place at the London Cat Show this weekend. People had travelled from across Europe to bring their pampered felines to compete in the show.
Compared to the London Dog Show, where the performance of the Dogs was a key part of their assessment, as cats can’t really perform, this competition was more about an evaluation of the ‘quality’ of the cat. This appears to be determined by how like the ‘ideal’ version of that breed they are, as each breed has certain characteristics; bone structure, size, ears etc which it should exhibit.
The owners were all pretty protective of their cats. I can imagine they must have cost a pretty penny if they are competition level felines so I can understand their owner’s concern. They weren’t keen for anyone to touch the cats, especially without asking, and interestingly they also held the cats in an unusual way – sort of out in-front of their body like they were a weapon. There was preening going on everywhere, with hair spray and fluffing spray, and lots of cleaning cat noses and eyes. The cats all seemed pretty relaxed about the whole experience. I barely heard any ‘meow’s the entire time and they seemed content to be handled and moved around the arena to the different categories of the competition.
A fascinating day out for an animal love like myself and very interesting to see how the competition works. Highly recommended for a rainy day and suitable for all ages.
